things seen on a hike today
weather: ☀️ a cool wind blows
critters: WELL,
65°F/18°C in direct sunshine can be sweaty when hiking, but the wind kept us mostly cool. my region is supposed to get an actual winter in the coming days. it's looking like it'll only last a week--i guess i'll take what i can get.
the area described is a mixed riparian and chaparral community in southern california.
birds: western bluebirds + red-winged blackbirds + great-tailed grackles + american coots + house finches + mallards + canadian geese + common gallinule + california scrub jay + domestic geese + domestic duck
bugs: cabbage butterflies + painted lady + sonoran desert centipede
mammals: humans having a birthday party + gray squirrels + california ground squirrel + domestic dogs + viscera of something, probably a medium-sized rodent
fishes: tiny minnows of some kind. couldn't get a good look
interesting plants: arroyo willow + toyon + laurel sumacs + live oaks + medium tree with dark twisting pods that might be a black locust? the leaves were awfully long for that and they're not native to this area. if you're in southern california and know your trees, shoot me an email: chokecherry@tuta.io
