color correspondences of school subjects
weather: ☀️ hot pavement, hot hot hot

back to school shopping season and i noticed folks seem to have strong opinions on what color corresponds to what school subject. here are mine from my solid color notebook days1
english/literature: 🟡 yellow, to perk up the drear of the readings we were so often assigned. but i guess happy people and happy events are pretty boring to read about
history/social studies: 🟣 purple, because these subjects were my favorite and my favorite color is purple. i also thought i was being clever and visually referencing phoenician murex dye. is there anything more fucking annoying than a child who reads
science: 🔵 blue was for boys and science was for boys (so ran my childthoughts) so science went in the blue notebook. now i know better, of course, but think of any mad scientist character. what color is his shirt? that's right, blue. nobody correct me on this. i do not want to hear counterexamples
elective: 🟢 i was a bad child and never got to choose my own electives; that was the right of good children. my favorite unchosen elective was agriculture, rendering the green notebook appropriate for a single school year
foreign language: ⚫ the elegance of spanish struck me as deserving of the most grown-up looking notebook
math: 🔴 red, representing all the vitality that math saps from me
in elementary i used wide-ruled notebooks with kittens or awesome fantasy art on them, but in middle school i found these were insufficient and slightly childish. college-ruled notebooks with awesome fantasy art existed back then, but they were more expensive and i was hesitant to ruin them with my slovenly notetaking. i used the cheapest spiral-bound solid color notebooks from the office depot until my return to college, when thin japanese notebooks had become more available in this country. i prefer these now--plain, but aesthetically pleasurable.↩
